Hoyt Leads Seawolves Past Owls

South Portland - Lady Seawolves senior center Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) scored a game high 19 points and grabbed nine boards to lead SMCC to an 89-51 victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle (UMPI) yesterday afternoon.

Full court pressure out of the gate allowed the Seawolves to jump out to 23-8 lead after one quarter of play. Post players Maria Veino (Sanford, ME), Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) and Hoyt combined for 17 of the teams 23 points and shooting guard Vanese Barnes (Jay, ME) chipped in the other six. In the second quarter the Seawolves outscored the Owls by just four, 24-20, thanks to 5-11 shooting from beyond the arc by UMPI. The Seawolves entered the break with a 19 point cushion, leading 47-28.

The Owls slashed the lead to thirteen in the opening minute of the third quarter when shooting guard Sydney Churchill connected on back to back three pointers. The Seawolves answered with three consecutive layups to get the lead back up to 19. Midway through the third a Barnes' three pointer sparked an 11-1 Seawolves' run to close out the quarter and take a 69-40 advantage into the final period. In the fourth quarter the Seawolves drained three shots from downtown en route to the 89-51 victory. 

Joining Hoyt on the leader board where Barnes and Veino who each netted 13. Point guard Destinie Montano (Chicopee, MA), center Shannon Kriger (Norway, ME) and Jones each chipped in eight. For the game the Seawolves shot an impressive 47% from the field and outrebounded the Owl 58-31.

Churchill paced the Owls with 18 points, including 4-7 from three point range. Shooting guard Kylee Alton added 10 on 2-5 shooting from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. 

With this triumph the Seawolves improve to 17-5 overall while sporting a 7-3 conference record. SMCC will host UMaine-Augusta on Wednesday at 6pm and will be looking for redemption for the 74-50 loss the Moose handed the Seawolves back in November.
