AUGUSTA, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team defeated the Moose of the University of Maine- Augusta (UMA) 64-49 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) contest on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
First-year Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) led the SeaWolves in scoring, pouring in a season-high 16 points in 21 minutes of work. In her first game back at the Augusta Civic Center and facing her former team, senior Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine) scored 11 and added nine more rebounds to her resume. First-year Alicia Ruth(Plaistow, N.H.) followed suit with 11 points and sophomore Alexis Antonacci (Long Island, N.Y.) contributed with 10.
UMA senior Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) was the game's high scorer, recording a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds in 40 minutes on the floor.
In a game that featured five lead changes, the Moose held a two-point lead, its largest of the night, mid-way through the first quarter. The SeaWolves outscored their opponent in the first three quarters and held a commanding 18-point advantage with 3:30 left in the game to cruise to a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) best eight wins.
The SeaWolves fired an impressive 40 percent (8-20) from three-point land and shot 41.1 percent from the floor. After the game, Head Coach Katie Bergeron commented, "Another great win on the road! We had four girls in double-digits; Ally Ruth started strong with three three-pointers in the first half. UMA adjusted to smother her on defense but Kaylah Abdul stepped up and was a force off the bench scoring 16! We're excited to go into the break 8-0 and pick up where we left off after Thanksgiving!"
SMCC keeps pace with Central Maine Community College, both tied for first place in the YSCC standings sporting an unblemished 3-0 conference record.
The action continues when the SeaWolves travel to Concord, N.H. to take on the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) in another YSCC tilt on Thursday, Dec. 1. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
