AUBURN, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team suffered a 61-55 loss at the hands of the University of New Brunswick- St. John (UNBSJ) on the second day of the Can Am Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 29.

UNBSJ, the Canadian SeaWolves, entered play coming off a 19-point loss to host school Central Maine Community College on day one. UNBSJ came out shooting in this one but SMCC scored four better showing plenty of offense in the first quarter.

SMCC's lethal backcourt combined for eight of the team's 10 second quarter points, first-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore Kaylah Abdul (South Berwick, Maine) each going for four to give their team a 32-29 lead at the half.

UNBSJ recovered with a 17-point third quarter to close its deficit to one. First-year Emily Emerson(Topsham, Vt.) would make a layup to give SMCC a 55-53 advantage with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth. The team from Canada closed the game on a 8-0 run to go on to win by a six-point margin. 

UNBSJ's Kathryn Magee was the game's leading scorer with 20. Ramirez and Emerson both finished with double-digit totals and a combined 15 rebounds. Ramirez added four assists and two steals.

SMCC splits at the Can Am and begins  1-1 overall. 

The Lady Wolves are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 4 inside the HUB for the first time this season in a date with the Naval Preparatory Academy. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
