SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team was defeated 79-51 to the Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Preparatory School 79-51 in its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 4.
SMCC stood with Navy Prep for much of the first quarter, down 21-18 with six minutes in the books. The Midshipmen strung together an 11-1 run to end the quarter and go up 32-19. The SeaWolves were limited to seven points in the second in part to six turnovers.
The Midshipmen ran a disciplined offense pouring in 27 in the third quarter; the SeaWolves would eventually outscore their opponent 12-10 in the fourth as first-year Abigail Ramirez (Methuen, Mass.) gave the home team life finishing for six points in the paint. SMCC ended the game on a 10-2 run to shrink its final deficit to 28 points.
Navy Prep's Jennifer Coleman was the high scorer with 20 points and nine rebounds. Both Kolbi-Monet Green and Ciera Hertelendy finished with 16 points. Ramirez led the SeaWolves with 14 points and four assists. Sophomore co-captain Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) added six, knocking down two from three-point territory.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Bergeron reflected, "This Navy Prep team was incredibly talented and athletic. They were well coached with a high basketball IQ. Although we lost, it's always great to play and learn from such a high level of competition. This game will only help us fine tune and progress as a team. Each game we play we continue to have new freshmen successfully adjust to the college basketball level; this game we definitely saw new and wonderful things from first-year Lauryn Fagan who as a force in the post!"

SMCC stands 1-2 overall as Navy Prep improves to 5-0 on the season—a road trip that included a win over reigning United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Champions Central Maine Community College.
Next, the Lady SeaWolves will host the University of Southern Maine in a closed scrimmage on Tuesday, Nov. 7 before getting to Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play at Paul Smith's College on Friday, Nov. 10.
