Lady Wolves Suffer First Loss In Overtime At Machias

MACHIAS, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball team suffered its first blemish of the season in overtime to the Clippers of the University of Maine at Machias 68-63 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) contest on Sunday, Dec. 8.

The SeaWolf defense held the Clippers to just five points in the first quarter but surrendered 16 in the second to lead by a slight two-point margin at the break 23-21. First-year Ashleigh Mathisen (Portland, Maine) dropped seven points and two three-pointers in the third to help her team to a 19-point quarter.

First-year Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) knocked down two free-throws late in the fourth quarter to put the road team ahead by two. The Clippers responded with two consecutive jumpers to lead by a pair before first-year Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) landed a contested layup before time expired to push the game to overtime 54-54.

The Clippers posted 14 points in the five minute overtime period to secure the five-point victory.

Mathisen led her team with 18 points on 6-7 shooting; both Andrews and junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) finished with 12. Machias’ Tate Dolley led all scorers in the game with 34 points on 10-17 shooting. The forward totaled 15 rebounds and converted an impressive 14-16 from the free-throw line.

The Lady SeaWolves stand 10-1 overall, still atop of the Yankee standings at 6-1. Machias improves to 6-2 overall, 3-1 in conference action.

Next, SMCC will host the defending United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCC) national champion Mustangs from Central Maine Community College as part of the “best small college basketball rivalry in Maine” on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
