Lady SeaWolves Roll To YSCC Final Four

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball team dominated in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) quarterfinal playoff matchup with the #6 Rams from Unity College 118-34 Saturday, Feb. 22.

First-year Ashleigh Mathisen (Portland, Maine) netted 14 points on a perfect 6-6 from the floor, 2-2 from beyond the arc. First-year Grace Fontaine (Auburn, Maine), junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine), and senior captain Adrianna White (Lisbon, Maine) all finished with 13 points. Junior captain Julianna Lafrenaye (Nobleboro, Maine) totaled her first double-double of the season going for 12 and 11.

Unity’s Marissa Sweeney led all scorers in the game with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The SeaWolves limited their opponent to single digit scoring totals in each of the first three quarters, two points in the second, and topped out at 35 points in the third. SMCC made 50.5 percent of 91 shot attempts and scored 57 points off turnovers.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard commented, “Today we were firing on all cylinders at both ends and when we do that we are a dangerous team. As a young program, this group continues to get better every game—we are locked in a ready to make a run at a title next weekend.”

The Lady SeaWolves will face the winner of #2 University of Maine at Machias vs. #7 NHTI next Saturday, Feb. 29 in a semifinal game at The HUB. Tip-off will be scheduled for 4 p.m.
