Flanders and the SeaWolves Conquer Knights 82-49 To Begin 2020

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball team conquered the Lady Knights from the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) 82-49 in a non-conference contest at The HUB Saturday, Jan. 4.

The SeaWolves netted 20 or more in each of the first three quarters and combined for a first-half score of 51. SMCC made 42.3 percent from beyond the arc and out-rebounded the opposition by 24 to ride a comfortable victory.

First-year Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) finished with 22 points converting on 50 percent from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. She recorded her fourth double-double of the season ripping 12 rebounds, eight offensive, adding four steals and five assists.

First-year guard Grace Fontaine (Auburn, Maine) contributed with double-figures for the sixth time this season on 4-7 from downtown and first-year point guard Ashleigh Mathisen (Portland, Maine) followed with 11 points and five assists.

CCRI’s Jada Burton-Hall led all scorers in the game with 25 on 10-22 shooting. She pulled seven rebounds and tallied five assists in 34 minutes of work.

In a post-game interview Head Coach Katie Bergeron reflected, “It was great to be back playing again with a win against a quality opponent to start 2020—we were able to rest a few with nagging injuries and saw others step up big. Tara was a force underneath, also getting effective shooting from our freshman guards—Ashleigh, Grace, Ainsley, and Katrin who combined for 11 three-pointers! We have a busy January ahead and excited to build momentum as we begin a new semester.”

SMCC improves to 6-1 on its home floor, 13-2 overall; CCRI dips to 4-11 on the year having lost 10 of its previous 11.

The SeaWolves match up with another NJCAA-opponent at UConn-Avery Point with hopes to extend their 3-game win streak on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Tip-off in Groton, Conn. is set for 4 p.m. WATCH.
