SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball team flexed its muscles in another Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) victory over the Moose from the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) 75-49 on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

First-years Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) and Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine) totaled 11 of SMCC’s 21 first-quarter points. The SeaWolves continued to trouble the Moose, limiting them to just 10 points in the second to lead 40-21 at the break.

UMA began the third quarter on an 8-0 run to close the deficit 40-29, to be answered with a 15-4 string by the home team. The fourth quarter was highlighted by six points from rookie center Elise Hebert (Arundel, Maine) on 3-3 shooting. Junior captain Amanda Brett (Portland, Maine) led all scorers in the contest with 20.

UMA’s Hope Butler and Madeline Suhr combined for 22 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists.

In a post-game interview, Head Coach Katie Stannard reflected, “This one meant a lot, getting a result over a UMA team that is having success in the Yankee. We continue to make strides every day, hoping to peak as we move into the later stages of the season.”

The result pushes SMCC to 9-2 in league action, and 17-2 overall—a win total that exceeds all United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division 2 programs. UMA sits fourth in the YSCC standings at 7-4, and 9-5 on the year.
