#8 Women’s Basketball falls to #1 JWU- Charlotte in USCAA quarters

PETERSBURG, Va.—The #8-seeded Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's basketball team was defeated 62-37 by #1 Johnson & Wales University- Charlotte in the quarterfinal round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national tournament on Monday, Mar. 11.

Despite a 7-point first quarter, the SMCC offense came alive for 15 in the second to trail at the break by three. Johnson & Wales strung together its two most productive quarters in the third and the fourth, and limited the Seawolves to single digit scoring efforts to secure the victory.

A balanced scoresheet had senior co-captain Hope Butler (Rockland, Maine) leading the way with eight, adding nine rebounds. Co-captains Aija Andrews (Norwalk, Conn.) and Maddy York (Nobleboro, Maine) combined for 14 points, Andrews collecting six more blocks.

Three scored in double figures for the opposition led by Aimee Evans' 13 on 5-17 shooting.

Johnson & Wales advances to the semifinal round to battle #4 University of Cincinnati- Clermont.

The Seawolves will conclude their season with a consolation game against #2 Penn State University Beaver on Tuesday, Mar. 12. Tip-off from Richard Bland College is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
