Clippers Slip Away From Seawolves, 2-1

Clippers Slip Away From Seawolves, 2-1

South Portland - The Lady Seawolves, who are coming off a big win against reigning conference champions, NHTI, had another tough game this afternoon against UMaine-Machias who entered the contest sporting the best record in the YSCC at 3-1. Today the Seawolves were unable to come out on top as UMM's Nicole Zufelt knocked in two goals to lift the Clippers to a 2-1 victory.

The Seawolves controlled the ball for the majority of the first half but at the 33 minute mark UMM's Emma Parker found Zufelt on a breakaway, Zufelt was then able to shoot a well-placed ball over the finger tips of SMCC keeper Tori Strain (Freedom, ME). Strain accumulated nine saves on the day on 21 UMM shots.

Chasing a one goal disadvantage SMCC midfielder Sarah Clough (Mount Vernon, ME) gave a great pass to teammate Kym Hendrix (Waterboro, ME) who zipped past a Clipper defender and blasted the ball into the back of the net. The two teams entered the break deadlocked at one score a piece.

Just over five minutes into the second period Zufelt mustered up a second goal, this one unassisted, to give the Clippers a 2-1 lead. The Clipper defense allowed the Seawolves to get off only three shots during the second half, en route to the 2-1 win.

This marks the first loss for the Seawolves as they slip to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. They will look to bounce back in their next game on Tuesday September 15th when the travel to Central Maine CC for a  4:30pm game.
