Fields Ties Record, SMCC Falls Late

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College women's soccer team suffered a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) 4-3 loss to the Rams of Unity College on Saturday, Oct. 8. Prior to the match, SMCC celebrated four members of the team in their last regular season conference game who plan to graduate from their academic program or transfer to another institution following the season. These were sophomores Bailey Crawford (Casco, Maine), Madelyn Wade (Brunswick, Maine), Shayna Hicks (Corinna, Maine), and Hannah Fields (Shapleigh, Maine).

Fields netted her 12th goal of the season in the 38th minute of the first half to put her team on the scoreboard. With that goal, Fields tied Cady Gagnon for the all-time points record in program history. With one more regular season game and a post season game remaining, Fields needs one more point to claim the top spot. Lillian LaRochelle doubled the SMCC lead before the first-half whistle with a goal in the 43th minute.

The Rams opened up the scoring in the second-half courtesy of Mariza Goinfriddo. First-year Taylor Currier (Naples, Maine) scored 30 seconds later, breaking away from two Rams' defenders and slotting a ball by the Unity goal keeper. After, it was the Unity offense that turned it on and scored three consecutive goals, the go-ahead goal in the final minute, to secure a 4-3 victory.

SMCC goal keeper Emily Harris (Dayton, Maine) made eight saves on 12 shot attempts.
