SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Bengals from the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) in its season opener at Wainwright Recreation Complex on Thursday, Sept. 2.

After a standoff through 33 minutes, the reigning United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division 1 reigning champions found the back of the net courtesy of Brittney Thompson to lead by a score at the half.

The Bengals would double their lead in the 56th minute off a corner kick header by Tarece Rickey and before Dora Cacari connected for a well-timed shot that found side netting at 81:39.

First-year SMCC goalkeeper Jenamarie Boston (Waterville, Maine) tallied 13 saves spanning 90 minutes of work.

Head Coach Ethan Wells commented, "I was proud of the way we executed the game plan, with hardnosed and balanced defending. This was certainly a test, and one that we will look back on in preparation for what's to come."

Following the postponement of SMCC's match at Massasoit Community College, the SeaWolves take the pitch again at Springfield Technical College on Saturday, Sept. 11 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
