FARMINGTON, Pa.— Three Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) student-athletes were honored at the 2017 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national basketball awards banquet at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Vanese Barnes (Jay, Maine), a sophomore and co-captain of the women’s basketball team, was named to the USCAA National All-Academic Team. To achieve All-Academic status, student-athletes must have attained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher with at least 24 credits completed. Barnes earned a 3.7 last semester in working towards her degree in Education.

Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine), of the women’s basketball team, was selected to the Division II USCAA All-American Honorable Mention Team and also to the Women’s Division II All-Tournament Team following her dominant performance against Penn State University Hazleton in which she poured in 37 points and 18 rebounds. Conrad set a USCAA single-game points record (but has since been broken) to lead her team to a semi-final appearance—the first in program history.

John Morgan (Sanford, Maine), captain of the men’s basketball team, was selected Division II USCAA First-Team All-American among the 10 best players in the nation.
