SMCC Basketball Programs Earn Bids To National Tournament

UNIONTOWN, Pa.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men’s and women’s basketball programs will attend the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Basketball Tournament in Uniontown, Pa. from February 28- March 4.

The men’s program was awarded an automatic bid to the tournament after being crowned Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) champions in their defeat of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) on Sunday, Feb. 19. Among the 10 Division II teams earning bids, the SMCC men will enter play as the fifth seed and match up against fourth-seeded Penn State University Greater Allegheny in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, March 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.

The SMCC women received an at-large bid, learning they were the fourth seed upon viewing the selection show on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The SeaWolves will return to the big dance for the third consecutive year and face Penn State University Hazleton in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Other teams representing the YSCC feature #7 NHTI in the men’s bracket, and #1 Central Maine Community College on the women’s side. SMCC is the only institution among Division II participants represented by both the men’s and women’s program.

Tournament registration and the Skills Challenge will take place on Tuesday, February 28 as will the Tournament Banquet and Awards Ceremony where National All-Academic and All-Americans are announced.
