SMCC Athletics Honors Student-Athletes with Virtual Awards Ceremony

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletics Department held its annual awards banquet Tuesday, May 5. In lieu of an in-person presentation, the Athletics staff created a virtual ceremony to announce the department award winners and give recognition to the many outstanding achievements made by its student-athletes in 2019-20.

The begin the ceremony, Director of Athletics/Associate Dean of Students and emcee Matt Richards made welcome remarks before presenting noteworthy Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) accomplishments to include:

YSCC All-Conference Selections (12)

 

USCAA All-American Selections (7)

 

USCAA Academic All-Americans (Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, 24 credit hours) (5)

    • USCAA National All-Tournament Team
  • Joshua Nagle, Men’s Soccer
    • USCAA National All-Tournament Team
    • USCAA Leader in Save% (.912) and GA (0.56)
  • Amanda Brett, Women’s Basketball
    • USCAA National All-Tournament Team
    • SMCC all-time points leader
  • Marios Tsielos, Men’s Basketball
    • USCAA Leader in 3PT% (50.8)
  • Ethan Wells, Head Women’s Soccer Coach
    • YSCC Coach of the Year
    • USCAA Coach of the Year

 

To conclude the ceremony, SMCC Athletics named the recipients of its department awards.

Donald Ferrante Award—Most Improved Athlete (Male and Female)
To the most deserving student-athletes who showed strong traits of determination, improvement, and commitment to their teammates.

Recipients: Max Pushaw (Men’s Soccer) and Bailey Whitney (Women’s Basketball)

John Dakin Award—Outstanding Contribution
Given to a non-student-athlete who gave of their time to promote SMCC Athletics. Someone who volunteered or gave themselves above and beyond what the expectation might have been.

Recipient: Leslie Barteaux (SeaWolves Athletic Club)

Timothy D. Hagerman Scholarship
Given to a returning men’s basketball player who puts his team before himself and is a positive member of the school community.

Recipient: Jake Drew

Carrol Rines Award—Sports Person of the Year (Male and Female)
To the most deserving student-athletes who demonstrated a high level of dedication and commitment to their team and the athletic department overall, image and success are strong factors.

Recipients: Cameren Cousins (Men’s Basketball/Baseball) and Ryleigh Lord (Women’s Soccer/Softball)
