SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards published the findings of the semi-annual Fall 2023 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility—a higher threshold than those standards of the College.

  • Overall student-athlete GPA: 2.90 (.18 better than fall 2022)
  • Fall 2023-Spring 2024 USCAA retention rate: 90% (1 percent better than fall 2022)
  • Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 73 (49% of total student-athletes)
  • Best team GPA: women’s volleyball/softball (3.16)
  • Best team retention rate: women’s volleyball (100 percent)

Athletics launched its Student-Athlete Academic Success Center in the spring of 2023, a newly renovated space inside the HUB Athletic Center, to help in meeting the demands of accomplishing as a student-athlete.

In strategic review of the data Richards stated, “After a soft launch last spring, the Success Center was fully operational from start to finish this semester. Coaches have required use of the space as part of their programs, and we have seen these efforts pay dividends in academic performance. I’d like to give thanks to the Seawolves Athletic Club and to a few special donors in making this resource possible, building upon the positive traditions of academic retention in the department.”
