SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— At the conclusion of the semester, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Associate Dean of Athletics and Alumni Affairs Matt Richards published the findings of the semi-annual Spring 2024 Athletics Engagement and Academic Report. The report shows student-athlete GPAs and retention rates based on United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) normal progress rules for athletic participation eligibility—a higher threshold than those standards of the College.
Spring 2024
- Total student-athletes: 153 (21% increase from spring 2023)
- Overall student-athlete GPA: 2.96 (.07 points better than spring 2023)
- Fall 2023-Spring 2024 USCAA retention rate: 90% (the same rate as fall 2022-spring 2023)
- Student-athletes earning a 3.0 GPA or better: 84 (55% of total student-athletes)
- USCAA Academic All-Americans: 16 (3.5 GPA or better, totaling 24 or more credit hours)
- Leslie Barteaux Scholar Athletes of the Year (36 credit hours or more)
- Anna White (Women’s Volleyball): 3.92
- Andrew St. Hilaire (Men’s Basketball): 3.91
In strategic review of the data Richards stated, “We take great pride in our student-athletes’ efforts in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. This year’s Seawolves continue to be a shining light when balancing athletics and academics. The support of coaches and the new initiative of our Academic Success Center have put our student-athletes in the best possible position to succeed!”
