Women Claim Top Spot, Men Eighth in National Coaches Poll

NORFOLK, Va.— In the release of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) basketball coaches poll on Friday, Jan. 6, both the men’s and women’s programs of Southern Maine Community College received national ranking for the fourth consecutive week among the top 20 Division II teams in the association.

In a poll based on a point system and voted on by a committee of men’s and women’s basketball coaches nationwide, the SMCC women’s team received 292 total votes to move the SeaWolves into the top spot for the first time in program history! Ranked second in the previous poll, the women overtook Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC)-opponent Central Maine Community College who drop to third in week four of the regular season. The four other YSCC teams receiving rankings were: New Hampshire Technical Institute (6) down two spots, College of St. Joseph’s (VT) (9), University of Maine at Augusta (10) down two, and the University of Maine at Machias (20) down one. 

Among the five YSCC teams making the poll on the men’s side, SMCC received a total of 261 points, coming in at eighth and one spot up from the previous poll. Other YSCC programs receiving rankings were: NHTI (6), CMCC (9) down one spot, St. Joseph’s (10) up two, and Vermont Technical College (20). 

Berkeley College- NY remains the unanimous point-getter and top team in the national rankings. 

Both men’s and women’s basketball travel to the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) on Saturday, Jan. 7 for two non-conference games.
