Randy Vasquez: Student-Athlete Spotlight

Randy Vasquez: Student-Athlete Spotlight

Interview conducted and written by Kylie Johnson

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – First-year center Randy Vasquez (Methuen, Mass.) has been a great addition to the SMCC Men’s Basketball team. He has played in all 20 games this season, gaining a total of 77 points and 103 rebounds to date.

Following the recruiting process, Vasquez made the decision to attend SMCC where he is majoring in Business Administration. In an interview, Vasquez said that he came to South Portland excited to meet new people and get a fresh start— and that he has enjoyed the demands of being a student-athlete on campus.

Vasquez started playing basketball in the 8th grade. His interest stemmed from hearing stories about his father playing and his love of watching the NBA. When asked, Vasquez said that Shaquille O’Neal was his favorite player of all-time because, “He was such a dominant force on the court and is even a better person off of it.”

Commenting on Vasquez, Head Coach Matt Richards said, “Randy came to us as a player with great potential and just needed a place that provided the framework for him to reach his best. Randy did a great job this past fall semester, improving his academic efforts as well as giving our basketball program a big lift on the floor. His best is still ahead of him— I’m really happy with what he’s accomplished thus far.”

Vasquez’ favorite pre-game songs to listen to are Sum 2 Prove by Lil Baby and Wasted on You by Morgan Wallen.

You can watch Vasquez and his team play next at The HUB on Wednesday, February 8 at 8:00 p.m. vs. Great Bay Community College.
