Shea Pickering: Student-Athlete Spotlight

Shea Pickering: Student-Athlete Spotlight

By Kylie Johnson

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Shea Pickering is a sophomore guard on the Seawolves women’s basketball team. She is from Drewsville, New Hampshire and is majoring in Business Administration.

Shea has always had basketball in her life, beginning in the second grade. She sees her dad as her biggest supporter in her pursuit to play at the college level.

When asked about her favorite athlete Shea mentioned it was University of Connecticut women’s basketball star Paige Bueckers. She commented, “I look up to her and her positive attitude as she copes with personal physical challenges. I’ve had a few setbacks myself and to witness what Paige has accomplished has been super inspirational to me.”

Despite being unable to play this season due to injury, Shea has made a big impression on her coach and teammates. When asked about Shea, Head Coach Katie Stannard said, “Shea is a wonderful young woman and we’re so lucky to have her in our program. She has a very high basketball IQ, but she also cares so much about all her teammates that even without a jersey on this year she’s made an incredible impact.”

Shea has loved how welcoming SMCC has been, especially with being away from home, and said that what she has most appreciated about the women’s basketball program is that they feel like her second family.

After SMCC, Shea plans to start working in the Portland area at an interior design company.

Some fun things to know about Shea are that her favorite pre-game song is New Patek by Lil Uzi, her favorite animal is a cat, and her favorite pre-game snack is a Gatorade protein bar.
