#3 Seawolves Defeat #2 Moose to Advance to YSCC Title Game

Auburn, Maine (YSCC) – The #3 seeded Seawolves women's basketball team defeated the #2 UMA Moose in a tightly contested game, earning a 57-49 victory on Saturday, March 4th.

UMA came out strong, with an 11-4 lead six minutes into the game. SMCC would not go away and a Jaylyn Bartolome buzzer-beater as the first quarter expired cut the UMA lead to 13-10. That lead quickly disappeared when Maddy York came out and knocked down a three-pointer to tie the contest at 13 all.

Shortly after, UMA called a timeout and started to pull ahead, taking a 28-21 lead into the half. The Moose first half was highlighted by Kaeti Butterfield, who came in averaging 10.9 points per game and put up 13 first-half points on 6-7 shooting.

The second half of the game proved to be a battle, featuring many lead changes as the Seawolves would not go away. The Seawolves fought back and took a 36-34 lead with 8:48 left in the game, and they never looked back.

A Tara Flanders bucket with 3:15 remaining in the game put the Seawolves up 48-42. UMA would quickly march down the court and score a Kaeti Butterfield layup to bring the game to a narrow 48-45 Seawolves lead.

The #3 Seawolves got the better of the #2 Moose down the stretch, winning by a final score of 57-49.

For SMCC, Junior captain Tara Flanders led the charge in the second half, finishing the game with 20 points and five rebounds. Despite the loss, Kaeti Butterfield of UMA would finish with a game-high of 25 points.

The Seawolves advance to the YSCC Championship Game, which will be played Sunday, March 5th, at 12PM at Central Maine CC.
