Seawolves Take One From Dean

Seawolves Take One From Dean

South Portland, ME. The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team played their 3rd double header in 3 days. After winning their last 4 games, the Seawolves were able to get a split today with Dean College. During the 1st game, SMCC couldn't get the bats going as they only had 4 hits leading them to a 4-2 loss. The second game was a scrappy game as both teams made multiple errors. The Seawolves were able to pull one out as they won in the bottom of the 9th inning in walk off fashion on a wild throw that went out of play that scored Zachary Horton (South Portland, ME) from second base. SMCC won 15-14.

In game 1, the Seawolves were led by freshman short stop Ethan Bilderback (Annapolis, MD) who had 2 of the 4 SMCC hits. Sophomores Michael Calabrese (Dover, NH) and Alex Brown (Weymouth, MA) each had a hit and scored a run. Calabrese also stole home and drew a walk. Freshman pitcher Nate McKeown (Biddeford, ME) pitched the complete game but got the loss.

In game 2, 5 different players had multiple hits. Leading the pack was junior second baseman Jeremy Gearty (Lebanon, ME) who went 3 for 5 at the plate that included a double and a solo home run. Gearty also scored 3 times while contributing 2 RBI's and a stolen base. Sophomore outfielder and leadoff batter Michael Calabrese (Dover, NH) also went 3 for 5 and had 2 runs scored with a stolen base. Sophomore outfielder Alex Brown (Weymouth, MA) made an outstanding diving catch in the 9th inning to get the 3rd out causing Dean to leave players stranded on base. Brown also contributed 2 hits of which one was homerun. SMCC went through 4 pitchers with freshman Brendan Reil (Berwick, ME) ending up with his first win of the season.

With the Split with Dean, SMCC moves to 20-20-1 overall but they remain at 9-1 in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC). The Seawolves will play their last regular season game before the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament this Wednesday, April 24th as Northern Essex Community College (NECC) comes to town. The game is scheduled for a 3:00PM start.
