Seawolves Drop First Game of the 302 Challenge Cup

South Portland, ME. The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team held their last home game of the season against Bridgton Academy (BA) in a fight for the 302 Challenge Cup. The 302 Challenge Cup is a best of three series between the two teams with a trophy presented at the end. The first game of the best of three series is held at SMCC with the other 2 games on the road at Bridgton Academy. In the first game Bridgton came ready to play beating the Seawolves in 5 innings. The Seawolves pitching struggled as they gave up a total of 9 runs in the first 2 innings. The deficit was too much for SMCC to overcome as they lost by a score of 13-2.

Leading the way for the Seawolves in a losing effort was junior captain and second baseman Jeremy Gearty (Lebanon, ME) who went 2 for 3 at the plate while also stealing a base. Freshman third baseman Brendan Reil (Berwick, ME) went 1 for 2 while also scoring a run and contributing an RBI.  There were 4 other players on SMCC who also contributed a hit. Only going one inning on the mound and getting the loss was freshman pitcher Nate McKeown (Biddeford, ME).

With the loss tonight, SMCC drops to 22-21-1 overall and down 0-1 in the fight for the 302 Challenge Cup. The Seawolves will hit the road tomorrow May 4th to play Bridgton Academy again at noon. If the Seawolves win, the two teams will play a rubber match for the 302 Challenge Cup trophy. That game would be held at 2:00PM.
