Seawolves Finish Season With a Victory

Newport, RI. The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team traveled to Newport, RI to play their last games of the season against Navy Prep. After getting swept in the 302 Challenge Cup against Bridgton Academy (BA), the Seawolves hoped to earn a couple wins and finish the season on a good note. In game 1, the Seawolves started out in the hole and were behind the whole game until they were able to tie it up in the top of the 7th inning. Their hopes of sweeping the double header were shot when Navy Prep hit a walk off hit in the bottom of the 7th inning to win by a score of 6-5. In game 2, freshman pitcher Corey Mongiat (Waterboro, ME) dominated Navy Prep from the mound as he pitched a no hit complete game. Mongiat helped the Seawolves finish the season on a good note as they won 6-0.

In the first game, SMCC was led by sophomore center fielder Michael Calabrese (Dover, NH) who went 2 for 4 at the plate while also scoring 2 of SMCC's 5 runs. Sophomore outfielder Alex Brown (Weymouth, MA) also went 2 for 4 at the plate including a double. Brown also contributed an RBI and scored a run. Freshman pitcher Eli Capen (Jay, ME) took the mound and got a no decision when freshman Brendan Reil (Berwick, ME) came in the game in the 7th inning and gave up the game winning hit earning him the loss.

Leading the way offensively for the Seawolves in the 2nd game was freshman short stop Ethan Bilderback (Annapolis, MD) who went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double. Bilderback also knocked in 2 runs while also scoring once. Junior second baseman Jeremy Gearty (Lebanon, ME) went 1 for 2 with a double and also drew a walk. Gearty also scored twice while contributing an RBI. On the mound was freshman pitcher Corey Mongiat (Waterboro, ME) who earned the victory and helped finish the Seawolves' season in style.

With the split, SMCC finishes the season 23-23-1 overall and Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) tournament champions.
