Seawolves Lose Two in Season Opener

Newport News, VA - The Seawolves baseball team opened up their spring season yesterday afternoon in Newport News, VA with a double header against the Dolphins from the College of Albermarle located in North Carolina and the Shipbuilders of the The Apprentice School, the tournament host. 

In opening action the Seawolves started off sluggish, trailing 8-1 to the Albermarle after three innings of play. But in the sixth with two outs, the Seawolves had five consecutive batters get on base and Timothy Andersen (Beverly, MA) capped off the run with a two RBI double, bringing the Seawolves to within three runs. The Dolphins were able to tack on one more run in the seventh but again the Seawolves were able to find a rythmn on offense. In the eighth inning Dylan Morrow (Hays, TX) hit a base clearing double to bring in three more runs and close the gap to one run, 9-8, but the the Dophins were able to hold the Seawolves scoreless and clinch the 9-8 victory. The Seawolves relief pitchers each gave solid performances, Michael Mageles (Bridgton, ME) threw three innings giving up only one run and Andrew Rascoe (Fryeburg, ME) pitched a scoreless eighth.

In the second contest the Seawolves faced off against the Shipbuilders of The Apprentice School. SMCC struck first when Zachary Horton (South Portland, ME) hit an RBI single putting the Seawolves up 1-0. That lead however was shortlived as the Shipbuilders jumped on pitcher Nate Boyle (Windham, ME) scoring seven runs in the first two innings to go on top 7-1. Apprentice chalked up four more runs between innings four and seven to take a commanding 11-1 lead after seven innings of play. In the eighth Adam Volkernick (Rumford, ME) hit an RBI ground out to give the Seawolves their second run. In the final inning Derek Roberts (Conway, NH) offered up a sacrfice fly, while Jon Daniszewski (Laconia, NH) hit an RBI single, this duo drove in two runs, finishing the game at a score of 11-4.

The Seawolves will return to action on March 11th at 3pm against Thomas Nelson Community College and again at 5:30pm when they will get a second chance at the Apprentice School.
