Seawolves Soar Past Owls, Grab First Two Spring Victories

Seawolves Soar Past Owls, Grab First Two Spring Victories

South Portland - After a large personnel change between the fall and spring seasons the Seawolves struggled to adjust and put together a complete game and defeat their opponents. But in this afternoon's double header against the Owls of the University of Maine - Presque Isle the Seawolves were relentless. In game one they came out swinging, getting four hits and four runs in the first inning, eventually defeating UMPI 8-1. In the second game the Seawolves had a commanding fourth inning, racking up five runs en route to their 6-1 victory.

In game one the Seawolves wasted no time generating their offense. Leadoff batter Jon Daniszewski (Laconia, NH) hit a double on only the second pitch of the ball game. Centerfielder Alex Brown (Weymouth, MA) followed up with an RBI double of his own to put the Seawolves on the scoreboard. Ethan Bilderback (Annapolis, MD) crushed a triple bringing Brown home and tacking on another run for SMCC and Dylan Morrow (Hays, TX) nailed an RBI triple of his own to put the Seawolves up 4-0 at the end of the first inning. The Seawolves built up a seven run lead before the Owls got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Owl leftfielder Ryan Thompson scored on a stolen base, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Seawolves as they went on to win 8-1. Brown went four for four at the plate, with three doubles and a single and pitcher Daniel French (Richmond, VT) threw all seven innings, giving up only six hits and one run to go with eight strikeouts.

In game two both teams got off to a slow start with the score knotted at 0-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. That all changed when shortstop Bilderback was walked and then advanced to third on a Zachary Horton (South Portland, ME) double which was followed up by a Andrew Rascoe (Fryeburg, ME) double bringing Bilderback home and advancing Horton to third. The Seawolves went on to score five runs in the fourth and triumphed over the Owls in game two 6-1. Pitcher Corey Mongiat (Waterboro, ME) had an impressive performance throwing the entire game, giving up four hits and one run while racking up twelve strikeouts.

With these two victories the Seawolves improve to 10-16 and remain 5-4 in YSCC play. They will be back at it tomorrow for a double header against Navy Prep at home at 1 and 3pm.
