Seaawolves Drop Two on the Road

Seaawolves Drop Two on the Road

Rutland, VT - Yesterday the Seawolves hit the road to face off against the Fighting Saints of St Joseph's College (VT) hoping to avenge the losses they suffered earlier in the weekend but the Saints proved to be too much as the topped the Seawolves 8-7 in game one and again in game two by a score of 7-2.

The Seawolves opened game one with two runs in the top of the second. The first of those runs came off an RBI single by Kyle Reichert (Portland, ME) and the second on an errant throw on an infield single by Kyle Bussiere (Lewiston, ME). The Saints put up a run in both the third and fourth to knot the game at 2-2 after four innings of play. SMCC regained the lead in the top of fifth when they brought two across the plate off RBI singles by shortstop Philip Langley (Shawnee, OK) and second baseman Justin Ciszewski (Auburn, ME). They were unable to hold the lead for long as the Saints chalked up four runs in the bottom of the fifth on an SMCC error and two RBI singles.

Chasing a two run lead entering the seventh SMCC's Ciszewski started the offensive action with a single and teammate Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, ME) followed up with a single of his own to put the game tying run on base. A sacrifice fly and an RBI single by the Seawolves offense brought these two runners home to tie the game at six runs apiece and give the Seawolves new life. Joe Apon (Portland, ME) scored the go ahead run for the Seawolves on a Jon Daniszewski (Laconia, NH) RBI single to give SMCC a 7-6 edge entering the bottom of the seventh. St. Joe's started off with back to back singles which were followed up by a sacrifice fly that allowed in one run to tie the game and eventually an infield single that brought home the game winning run would seal the fate of the Seawolves who fell to the Saints 8-7.

It appeared that the injured Seawolves squad may have given everything they had in game one as they were only able to generate two runs in the second game. The first of these runs came in the third inning when centerfielder Alex Brown (Weymouth, MA) crushed a triple and a sac fly by Ciszewski brought him across the plate. SMCC was able to keep the game within reach with a tie score, 1-1, entering the bottom of the fifth but St. Joe's pulled away when they put up six runs in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead. Again the Ciszewski/Burpee combination were able to bring in a run but it wasn't enough to erase the six run deficit as the game ended 7-2 in favor of St. Joe's.

Ciszewski led the Seawolves offense for the afternoon going 4-7 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs.

The Seawolves (16-12, 9-5 YSCC) will wrap up their regular season this week with a mini series against in-state rival, Bridgton Academy. The first of the three games between the two teams is scheduled for this afternoon at 4pm at home, but impending weather could cause this to be rescheduled for later in the week.
