Reichert Earns Walkoff Victory for the Seawolves

Reichert Earns Walkoff Victory for the Seawolves

Myrtle Beach, SC - In the first of two games yesterday things started out pretty dismal for the Seawolves. Starting first baseman Kyle Reichert (Portland, ME) sustained an injury during batting practice that would require a trip to the hospital and after four and a half innings of play SMCC found themselves trailing 9-4. A  momentum shift in favor of the Seawolves closed the gap to just two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With two men on base, Reichert returned just in time to sub in as a pinch hitter and drill a base clearing bomb to deep right center to give the Seawolves a 13-12 walkoff victory.

Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, ME) gave the Seawolves a lift in the fifth when he hit a two run homer to cut the MCCC lead to 9-6. However Morris had the answer, responding with two runs in the sixth and putting the lead back up to five. Seawolves' freshman Juan Espinosa (Spring Hill, FL) crushed a line drive homerun off the scoreboard in the sixth to cut the lead to four but again Morris responded with a run keep the lead at five, 12-7, for the Seawolves last set of at bats. SMCC started the seventh inning with a ground out but Cam Brochu (Manchester, ME) followed up with a homerun to left closing the gap to four runs. SMCC proceeded to rattle off four consecutive singles by Shawn Murphy (Poland, ME), Burpee, Joe Apon (Portland, ME) and Espinosa to cut the deficit to 12-10. That is when Reichert stepped up to the plate and crushed one into right center to clinch the walkoff victory.

The Seawolves faced off against St. Clair Community College in game two. SMCC freshman Caleb Chambers (Lebanon, ME) took the mound for his debut and after a three run homer in the first he allowed only one unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Unfortunately the Seawolves were unable to generate much on offense. Murphy hit an RBI ground out to put SMCC on the scoreboard and Reichert nailed a solo homerun, his third homer of the spring trip, but the St. Clair closer pitched a 1-2-3 inning to solidify the 4-2 St. Clair triumph.

The Seawolves (7-10-1) will be back on the field this afternoon, March 17th, with games at 12pm and 3pm.
