Saints Sink Seawolves

Saints Sink Seawolves

South Portland - In this weekends double header between SMCC and the College of St. Joseph's (VT) the Saints walked away with game one, 11-2, but the teams really battled in game two with CSJ taking the eventual 2-0 triumph.

In the opener the Seawolves actually struck first when leadoff batter Caleb Chambers (Lebanon, ME) singled and then his pinch runner, Daniel Kane (Portland, ME), stole second and was batted home on a Tim Rodrigues (Barnstable, MA) double. The SM lead was short lived as the Saints tallied two runs in the second and four in the third to take a 6-1 advantage. The Seawolves did rally a little in the third with a Shawn Murphy (Poland, ME) RBI groundout but that was all they could muster as St. Joe's cruised to the 11-2 victory.

Game two was a pitching battle between SM's Nate Boyle (Windham, ME) and CSJ's Bill Brancatella, making runs difficult to come by for either squad. Boyle faltered in just one inning when he opened the third with a walk and then the Saints capitalized with an RBI single followed by an RBI double to take a two run lead, which would turn into the final score. Brancatella threw a complete game shutout with 12 strikeouts and forced the Seawolves to strand runners on base in five of the seven innings. Boyle ended the game with six strikeouts and gave up only seven hits.

After this weekend the Seawolves are 11-18 overall and 5-6 in conference play. Their next game is today Monday the 18th at Dean College in Franklin, MA at 11 & 1pm.
