FRANKLIN, Mass.— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team was defeated by United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA)-opponent Dean College in its spring debut 6-4 in a single nine inning game on Monday, April 3.

First year Head Coach Jordan Yanni turned to sophomore Kyle Parmley (Eliot, Maine) on this Opening Day against a Bulldog squad that came in already sporting a 3-10 record. The right-hander tossed 4.2 innings and allowed four earned runs over six hits and six strikeouts. Junior Charlie Hallak (Augusta, Maine) came on in relief to allow two earned runs spanning 3.1 innings of work.

Parmley was zoned in from the start, allowing just two hits over the first three innings. The SeaWolves jumped on the scoreboard first pushing one across in the fourth courtesy of a RBI double by sophomore Amos Herrin (Wilton, Maine). SMCC extended its lead by three in the top half of the fifth as sophomore Carter Chabot (Lewiston, Maine) delivered a two-out, two-RBI double scoring sophomore Caleb Chambers (Lebanon, Maine) and sophomore Nathaniel Cyr (Freeport, Maine).

Dean evened the score with four hits and four runs in the bottom half of the fifth. The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs to take the lead in the eighth. The SeaWolves went down in order in the top half of the ninth as Dean's Christian Ponce finished what he started to earn the win. Ponce went nine innings and allowed three earned runs over six hits and four walks; Parmley was taxed with the loss.

In a post-game interview Coach Yanni commented, "We played solid baseball today; stinging a couple balls right at the defense but put together a solid pitching performance. A couple long fly balls got the better of us, but overall a good outing for the first time outside this year."

SMCC now stands 5-4-1 overall and remains 3-2-1 in conference play; Dean improves to 4-10 overall.

The SeaWolves plan host the Community College of Rhode Island in its home opener on Saturday, April 8 in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12 and 2 p.m. Follow the live stats HERE
