CONCORD, N.H.— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team split with the Lynx of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) in its first Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play date this spring on Saturday, April 22.
Game 1: L, 3-2
Sophomore Nathan Huot (Biddeford, Maine) put on a dominant performance in his second start on the hill for the SeaWolves in game one. The left-hander tossed 6.2 innings and gave up only four hits and three runs, none earned.
SMCC jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning when sophomore Edgar Montan (Santiago, Dominican Republic) plated sophomore Amos Herrin (Wilton, Maine) on a single to right field to take a 1-0 lead.
The SeaWolves extended their lead on the same sequence in the third when Herrin doubled to left and Montan delivered the RBI-knock to right field.
NHTI evened the score in the bottom-half of the fourth when the SeaWolves committed a costly two-out error. The Lynx put the lead-off batter on in the bottom of the seventh, again by error, who eventually came around to score in walk-off fashion on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Herrin finished a perfect 3-3 from the dish with two extra-base hits; Montan contributed with a multi-hit game and was responsible for all of the SMCC offense.
Despite the better stat line, Huot was taxed with the loss as NHTI's Zach Poisson earned his second victory of the season.
Game 2: W, 8-2
Sophomore Kyle Parmley (Eliot, Maine) completed his second game of the season and held the Lynx, a team that averages almost seven hits a game, to just four. The right-hander allowed just two earned runs on his way his team-best third victory of the year.
Again, SMCC struck first when Montan collected his third and fourth RBI's of the day on a double to left field in the top-half of the third inning. Huot added to the lead on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
NHTI responded with a run in each of the same innings, but the SeaWolves would gain separation posting three in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth courtesy of RBI-singles by sophomore Max Salevsky (Hollis, Maine) and junior Charlie Hallak (Augusta, Maine).
Herrin had himself another two-hit game and now leads his team with a .306 batting average.
Parmley allowed just one base runner in the final two innings to lock up SMCC's first conference win of the spring. NHTI's Jerad Booth suffered his second loss of the season.
In a post-game interview, Head Coach Jordan Yanni commented, "I think we have the tools offensively to hang with any team, but we need to limit our mistakes in the field. To play sound defensively meant a road sweep instead of a split."
SMCC now sits atop the YSCC table with a 4-3-1 conference record, 7-13-1 overall. NHTI trails just a game back playing to a 6-5 conference record, 6-15 overall.
The SeaWolves and Lynx do it again on Tuesday, April 25, this time a single-nine inning game. First-pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Concord, N.H.
