SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team was defeated 11-9 by the Knights of Northern Essex Community College (NECC) in a single nine-inning non-conference game on Tuesday, April 11.

Sophomore Kyle Parmley (Eliot, Maine) made the start on the hill for the SeaWolves against a NECC club that had won five of its last six games—Alexander Santos his counterpart.

Both starters were roughed up in the first, an inning that featured nine runs on five hits and 22 plate appearances. The Knights pushed four across on two, two-out extra-base hits as the SeaWolves manufactured five in the bottom-half of the inning by way of heads-up base running and an RBI base knock courtesy of sophomore Nathaniel Cyr (Freeport, Maine).

NECC evened the score again with a two-out RBI in the second inning. Not to be outdone, SMCC answered with a pair of sacrifice flies by Cyr and junior Charlie Hallack (Augusta, Maine) to gain a two-run advantage.

The Knights scored two more in the fourth, one a solo homerun to lead off the inning, and then tacked on four more in the sixth. The SeaWolves chipped away at their deficit as Cyr drove in his third RBI and sophomore Edgar Montan (Santiago, Dominican Republic) delivered his second of the day.

The SeaWolves’ bullpen pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball, but the offense was unable to gather consecutive hits in the later three innings to complete the comeback. NECC’s Even Glew earned the win; Parmley was taxed with the loss.
