SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball program prepares to defend its 2019 Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) title with a 35-game spring slate beginning at the Ripken Baseball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Head Coach Dave Walsh will return for his second season at the helm, getting started with the defending United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series Champions Penn State Du Bois Mar. 8. SMCC will fit eight games in five days to finish with the College of DuPage on Mar. 12. The spring trip will feature four other Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) programs—Hazleton, Greater Allegheny, New Kensington, and Schuylkill.

The SeaWolves will open YSCC play with a 9-inning date against NHTI in Boston, Mass. on Mar. 21 before shipping to the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) the next day for a doubleheader. SMCC plans to finish the month with a single verse Great Bay Community College (GBCC), again in Boston, followed by another double dip with CCRI, this time at home.

April is packed with 22 games and begins at Bridgton Academy to battle the Wolverines who handed the SeaWolves their only loss of the fall season—ahead of two more meetings later in the month. SMCC will play a four-game home/away split with National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)-opponent Massasoit Community College, two singles against Northern Essex Community College, and a doubleheader with UConn- Avery Point. The SeaWolves will aim to continue their recent success verse Maine-state rival Central Maine Community College with a three-game series, two in Auburn at the Mustangs’ new turf facility. The defending conference champions intend to complete season sets with GBCC and NHTI and host Carlton University for its annual match-up with the team from Canada on Apr. 25.

The SeaWolves also fit a trip to Pennsylvania near the middle of the month to take on first-time opponent Bucks County Community College on Apr. 10.

SMCC is scheduled to host the YSCC Championships, a one-day tournament at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach on Saturday, May 2. The four-team tournament will be determined upon the results of the conference regular season. The SeaWolves have their eyes set on back-to-back USCAA National Tournament appearances, again set in DuBois, Pennsylvania May 10-14.
