PSU Beaver Makes Late Run To Defeat SMCC Baseball 8-5

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) baseball team suffered an 8-5 loss to the Nittany Lions from Penn State University Beaver in a single 7-inning affair as part of spring training on Tuesday, Mar. 10.

SMCC struck first pushing one across in its first reps of the game. The Lions answered the bell with one in the bottom half and three more in the second inning. The SeaWolves held a 5-4 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth before Beaver posted four runs to reclaim the lead.

Senior captain Caleb Burpee (Kennebunk, Maine) collected two RBI on one hit and first-year Alexander Miller (Brandon, Fl.) two hits on four trips to the plate.

Junior captain Dylan Francoeur (Westbrook, Maine) made his first start of the spring tallying four strikeouts over eight hits and two earned runs. Beaver’s Justyn Francona earned the win going seven full allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

SMCC drops its fifth straight game to sport an 11-6 overall record.

The SeaWolves take the field Wednesday, Mar. 11 for another two-team doubleheader featuring Penn State University New Kensington at 11 a.m. followed by a rematch with NJCAA-opponent Union County College at 3 p.m.
