Nic Lops Hired As SMCC Baseball Coach

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Nic Lops as Head Baseball Coach effective immediately.

Lops begins his head coaching career at SMCC having held the role of Hitting Coach and Assistant at his alma mater Saint Joseph’s College of Maine for the previous three seasons. A four-year starter as a catcher and infielder for Coach Sanborn and the Monks, Lops graduated with both his Bachelor of Arts in English (2015) and Master of Science in Education (2016).

Following his college career, Lops played one summer of Independent Professional Baseball with the Watertown Bucks before he landed at Daniel Webster College as Assistant Baseball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. In addition, Lops gained administrative experience working as the Assistant Director of Athletics and Activities at Cheverus High School for the 2017-18 academic year.

In addition to his duties with SMCC, Lops will continue to serve as an Education Technician at Cape Elizabeth High School and as the Head Coach of the Sanford Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League- ranked the number two summer baseball league in the nation.

Born and raised in South Portland, Lops expressed, “I am honored to take over as the next Head Baseball Coach at Southern Maine Community College. Being a college head coach has always been a dream of mine. I am looking forward to leading a group of young men with our main goal being to exemplify the highest level of character in the classroom, the community, and on the baseball field.”

Associate Dean of Students and Director of Athletics Matt Richards stated, “SMCC Athletics is happy to announce the appointment of Nic Lops as our Head Baseball Coach. His familiarity with the local baseball community, outstanding coaching experiences, and drive and energy make him an ideal fit to lead our student-athletes. I look forward to watching him build on the tradition of success that our baseball program has had for many years.”

SMCC Athletics plans for a full return of athletics in 2021-22 to include both a fall and spring baseball season.
