Second Half Rally Lifts Seawolves Over Moose

Second Half Rally Lifts Seawolves Over Moose

Augusta - In last night's YSCC basketball matchup between SMCC and UMaine-Augusta, the Seawolves found themselves trailing by 15 points at halftime, 48-33, after a red hot first half shooting performance by the Moose, 15-23 from the floor and 18-22 from the free throw line. However, the Seawolves rallied in the second half, outscoring the Moose 56-28, to come away with a 13 point victory and remain unbeaten in conference play.

UMA's Brandon Rogers put up 19 points in the first half on 4-7 shooting from the field and 11-13 from the free throw line, while teammate Taylor Wilbur chipped in with 14 first half points to give the Moose a comfortable double digit lead going into the halftime break. The Seawolves shot a dismal 12-42 from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while going only 6-15 from the charity stripe.

The much needed halftime break allowed the Seawolves to regroup and slowed UMA's first half momentum. The second half was a game of runs, four minutes into the second half the Seawolves had managed to shave the lead to seven after five points from captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, ME), a layup and pair of free throws from Jordan DeRosby (Waterville, ME) and two consecutive made shots by Grayson Waterman (Berwick, ME). The Moose fired back and after a pair of made free throws by Rogers at the 11:34 mark they had managed to get the lead back to 13, 67-54. The Seawolves followed up with a 14-2 run to close the gap to a single point, 69-68. UMA made their final push but could only manage to build the lead back up to six before the Seawolves finished the final five minutes on a 21-2 run, pulling away with the 89-76 triumph.

The Seawolves were led by Martin who ended with 25 points and 12 rebounds, recording his first double double of the season. Rogers ended with a game high 31 points and 12 rebounds for the Moose.

The Seawolves will be back on the court at Eastern Maine CC on Sunday the 30th at 4pm.
