Seawolves Overcome Early Deficit to Defeat Owls

Presque Isle  - Maine-Presque Isle tried to rally its young troops to pull off a solid home win Saturday, but their effort was undone by some key mistakes in the second half, as the Seawolves pulled out their 17th win of the season, 74-64.

The Owls charged out of the gate, leading 14-6 at one point behind key shots from freshman Kevin Collins and junior Chase Vicaire.  The Seawolves fought their way back and cut the lead to two, 17-15, on a made jump shot by Chase Soares (Falmouth, MA).

As the first half ebbed away, the Owls found themselves in a situation with several key players on the bench in foul trouble. The Seawolves took advantage of the makeshift lineup causing the Owls to turn the ball over on three straight possessions, leading to transition baskets for SMCC.  By half, the score was tied 30-30.

Southern Maine began the second half strong, scoring the first seven points on offensive rebounds or dribble penetration from Soares and teammate Tyheem Simon (Queens, NY). From that point the Seawolves continued to outscore the Owls 44-34 in the second half.

Captain Atencio Martin (Kittery, ME) had a big outing for the Seawolves, picking up a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Soares and center Carlos Gonzalez (Lewiston, ME) each netted ten for the SMCC.

The Seawolves (17-1, 12-0 YSCC) have a quiet week this week, not playing again until next Saturday when they face Dean College at home at 3:00pm.
