SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team extended its win streak to three games taking care of the Knights from Vermont Technical College (VTC) 101-54 in the first of two Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) meetings on Saturday, Dec. 18.
The first five minutes saw back-and-forth action before the SeaWolves rattled off a 16-0 run that spanned the next five minutes of play. The first half featured a perfect shooting performance from first-year guard Jack Pyzynski (Saco, Maine) who netted 15 points on 6-6 from the field and 3-3 from downtown.
SMCC's offensive production carried over to the second half by way of 56 points on 56.4 percent shooting. Pyzynski tallied a career-high 21 points and 5-made three-pointers. Junior captain Ian Regan (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds; junior captain DeSean Cromwell (Saco, Maine) dropped an efficient 13 points in 20 minutes of work.
VTC's Cyncere Watkins led his team with 15 points on 6-11 shooting, and tacked on five rebounds and three steals.
Commenting on his team's performance in the first semester, Head Coach Matt Richards stated, "You want to put yourself in a position in the second semester to play your best, play potentially for the home seed in the conference tournament—and I think we've done that. As long as our guys continue to do the things we've preached about and come back focused, as a coach that's all you can ask."
SMCC improves to 9-3 and sits the second-seed in the conference standings at 6-1. VTC drops to 2-12 overall, 2-5 YSCC.
The SeaWolves return from holiday break to host the University of Connecticut at Avery Point (NJCAA) on Wednesday, Jan. 5. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
