Five score in double figures to power SMCC over UMA

AUGUSTA, Maine-- The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team took down the Moose of the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) 77-62 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) action on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

The first half was closely contested, with SMCC holding a slim one-point lead at halftime, 36-35. The Moose would go up by as much as six points in the second, until the Seawolves rattled off 11 unanswered points to take back the momentum until the final whistle. 

Sophomore wing Luke Briggs (Augusta, Maine) led all scorers in the game with 16 points; he shot 50 percent from the field and made two three-pointers. Junior co-captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) contributed 15 points, six assists, and two steals, and sophomore co-captain Randy Vasquez (Methuen, Mass.) notched his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 17 rebounds.

For UMA, Zach Maturo and Isaiah Searles led the scoring with 14 points each. Maturo was efficient from beyond the arc, making two of his five three-point attempts. Searles also had a strong rebounding performance, pulling down nine boards.

SMCC connected at a 34.6% clip from beyond the arc, compared to UMA's 19.2%. Further, SMCC out-rebounded UMA 43-29.

The Seawolves extend their win streak to five in-a-row; the Moose remain winless at 0-4. 

Next, SMCC will travel to Clinton Community College (NJCAA) for a non-conference showdown on Sunday, Nov. 19. Tip-off in Clinton County, N.Y. is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
