Seawolves topple Herons in YSCC showdown

SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team extended its win streak to six games with a 77-64 victory over the Herons from Great Bay Community College (GBCC) in conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The Seawolves climbed out to a 17-point lead midway through the first half, and maintained that separation going into the break. Great Bay managed to outscore SMCC by a 3-point margin in the second half, but the damage had been done to allow the Seawolves a regular season series sweep over the Herons.

As a team, SMCC converted 42.9 percent of 70 field goal attempts, and assisted on 19 of 30 made baskets. Sophomore forward Luke Briggs (Augusta, Maine) led the way with 18 points. Rookie forward Adam Savage (Skowhegan, Maine) impacted the game on both ends registering 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a season-high five blocks. Junior co-captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) and first-year forward Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine) combined for 21 points.

GBCC's Kingsley Breen improved on his league-leading scoring average dropping 24 points on 9-16 shooting. Theodore Wolfe added 16 points.

The result pushes SMCC to 13-4 overall, 6-2 in league play. GBCC slips to 10-5, 4-5 YSCC.

The action continues when the Seawolves play host to the Knights from Berkeley College on Saturday, Jan. 20. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
