SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team came out on top 78-75 in double overtime against the Golden Eagles from Washington County Community College (WCCC) on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Ahead by seven at the half, SMCC fell victim to a WCCC run early in second. Back and forth action left the Golden Eagles leading 64-63 before a whistle with under a second remaining in regulation that sent sophomore co-captain Randy Vasquez (Methuen, Mass.) to the free throw line— Vasquez would make one of two to force overtime.

WCCC held another lead, this time a 3-point margin, with three seconds remaining in first overtime before sophomore Luke Briggs (Augusta, Maine) was fouled on a three-point attempt. Briggs knocked down all three from the stripe to force another overtime period.

Junior co-captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) and rookie forward Adam Savage (Skowhegan, Maine) each converted buckets in the second overtime period as the Seawolves limited the opposition to just one point. Savage had a timely and emphatic block that eliminated a three-point attempt to close the game.

Briggs finished with 18 points and Martinotti totaled 16 and six assists. Savage logged a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 19 boards; first-year Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine) came off the bench to chip in 10 points.

WCCC's Kevon Green topped all scorers in the game with 28, adding eight assists and three steals.

SMCC extended its win streak to two games, climbing to 17-6 overall. WCCC moves to 6-5 in their first season after a long-time hiatus.

The action continues when the Seawolves play host to the USCAA Div. 1 Bengals from the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
