SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) men's basketball team defeated the USCAA Div. 1 Bengals from the University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) 73-67 on Saturday, Feb. 10.

15 first-half points courtesy of rookie forward Adam Savage (Skowhegan, Maine) helped power the home team to a 1-point advantage at the break.

After ties and lead changes in the beginnings of the second half, a jumper by first-year forward Charlie Houghton (Dixfield, Maine) inside the 8-minute mark would give the Seawolves the upper hand for good. SMCC slowly built a lead that would eventually grow larger at the free throw line in the final minutes of regulation. Sophomore Luke Briggs (Augusta, Maine) converted the final four attempts to finish the job.

Four SMCC starters produced double-digit scoring efforts led by Savage's 18. Junior co-captain Thomas Martinotti (Harwinton, Conn.) chipped in 17, Briggs added 13, and sophomore co-captain Randy Vasquez (Methuen, Mass.) registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

UMFK's Jordan Guerrero led his team with 16 points, making four from beyond the arc.

SMCC wins its third straight game to improve to 18-6 overall; UMFK falls to 9-13 on the season.

The action continues when the Seawolves play host to conference rivals Central Maine Community College on Student-Athlete Recognition Day, Wednesday, Feb. 14. Tip-off at The HUB is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white in support of SMCC!
