
Auburn – The Lady Seawolves opened the 2013-14 season this afternoon playing at Central Maine Community College against the University of New Brunswick – St. John. With the score 60-59 in favor of the Lady Seawolves, a lapse in defense left UNB post player Monica Newman wide open for the go ahead layup with 12 seconds remaining in the contest. SMCC was able to get quality look at the basket in the final seconds but were unable to convert. A last second free throw by UNB finalized the score at 62-60 in favor of the University of New Brunswick.
The Lady Seawolves were led by the efforts of Roberta Trafton (Corinth, ME) who scored nine points and ripped down 12 rebounds. Teammate Esther Palmieri (South Portland, ME) led the team in scoring racking up 16 points, twelve of those coming from beyond the arc. Leading all scorers and pacing the UNB squad was Rachel Jefferson who ended the contest with 21 points and five rebounds.
With this loss the Lady Seawolves fall to 0-1 overall. They will return to action on Friday November 1st at home against Bunker Hill Community College at 6pm.
