Lady Seawolves Start Out Hot in Conference Play

South Portland - Today the Lady Seawolves participated in their first YSCC contest of the 2014-15 season against the Lady Knights of Vermont Tech. The Seawolves were red hot on the offensive end of the floor, shooting an impressive 49.5% from the field, and putting all 12 players in the scorebook as the came away with the 108-53 victory.

Both teams started off slow with the Lady Knights holding a 2-0 lead until the 15:32 mark when Seawolves' shooting guard Kendra Kagiliery (Kittery, ME) hit her first of five made three pointers to put SMCC on top 3-2. In the next five minute segment the Seawolves outscored the Knights 14-7 to build up a 17-9 lead midway through the first half. SMCC's Samantha Griffin (Union, ME) helped pad the lead when she hit back to back shots, a layup followed by a three pointer, as the Seawolves started to pull away from Vermont. Kagiliery hit her second three with five seconds remaining in the first half of play to give the Seawolves a 42-19 advantage entering halftime. 

The Lady Seawolves made the lead even more commanding when they came out on a 13-0 run, that was capped off by a Zyrah Giustra (New Sharon, ME) layup, to start the second half. The Seawolves totaled 66 points in the second half of play, the most points scored in a half thus far this season. SMCC was led by center Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) who netted a team high 18 points and Kagiliery who scored 15, all from downtown. Griffin also put up double digits, chipping in 13 with nine of those coming from beyond the arc while Giustra and shooting guard Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) each contributed 10 points. Center Jennifer Genthner (Newcastle, ME) led the team in rebounds with nine to go with eight points and point guard Caitlin King (Sebago, ME) tallied a team high six assists and also scored seven points.

The Lady Knights were led by shooting guard Kaitlin Lyford who scored a game high 19 points on 8-19 shooting and center Paige Wells who recorded a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. 

The Lady Seawolves (3-3, 1-0 YSCC) will hit the road next Wednesday when they travel to Unity College for their second YSCC contest. The game will be played at 6pm with the men's game to follow.
