Lady Seawolves Tame Bulldogs

Lady Seawolves Tame Bulldogs

South Portland - This afternoon the Seawolves picked up the program's first ever victory in eight previous attempts against the Lady Bulldogs of Dean College. The Bulldogs scored the first two points of the game on a Janaysia James layup but the Seawolves responded when point guard Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) banked in a three pointer as the shot clock expired to take the lead that Dean would never relinquish. The Bulldogs kept the game close, never letting the Seawolves pull away by more than nine, but SMCC prevailed in the end, 74-65.

The Seawolves entered halftime holding on to an eight point lead but the Bulldogs opened up the second half with a 10-2 run to knot the game at, 34-34. Seawolves' forward Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) ended the run with an old-fashioned three point play to put SMCC back on top. A layup by the Bulldogs cut the lead back to one but then Jones rattled off seven unanswered points to extend the Seawolves lead to 44-36.

The Bulldogs were able to claw their way back, cutting the lead back down to one on a James three pointer with 7:42 remaining. This time it was Abigail Nielsen (North Yarmouth, ME) who had the answer for SMCC when she drained one from downtown. The Seawolves built the lead back up to seven before Bulldogs shooting guard Sophia Corbitt drilled back to back threes to once again make it a one point game. This time it was Nielsen who capitalized on an "and-one" for the Seawolves, putting SMCC up 66-62 with 3:20 left in regulation. The Seawolves connected on 8-10 free throws in the final two minutes to solidify the 74-65 win.

Nielsen and Jones led the Seawolves with a game high 18 points each and the duo combined for 19 rebounds. Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds and Maria Veino (Sanford, ME) added eight points and 10 rebounds. Turner led the team in assists with six, to go with seven points.

With this win the Seawolves improve to 14-7, 9-3 in YSCC play. The next game for the Seawolves will be on Thursday at home against NHTI at 6pm.
