Jones Nets 18, Seawolves Advance to Semifinals

Concord, NH - The Lady Seawolves started out red hot in tonight's YSCC quarterfinal matchup, shooting 56% from the floor and 7-12 from beyond the arc in the first half as they picked up the 81-40 win over Vermont Technical College.

The Lady Knights picked up the early 3-0 lead but a three pointer from Seawolves' point guard Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) spurred an 11-2 Seawolves run to put SMCC in front, where they would stay for the remainder of the game. The Knights' were able to keep the game close, trailing only six, 18-12, with thirteen minutes to play but three consecutive three pointers by Seawolves' shooting guards Samantha Griffin (Union, ME) and Kendra Kagiliery (Kittery, ME) jumped the SMCC lead to 27-14. Fourteen seemed to be the unlucky number for the Knights as they remained at 14 points for nearly five minutes while the Seawolves expanded their lead to 39-14.

The Seawolves were able to build up a 56-23 lead going into halftime, thankfully giving themselves a little cushion because the red hot shooting from the first half was extinguished in the second. The Seawolves shot only 35% from the floor and 1-8 from downtown in second half action. Captain Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) kept the Seawolves alive, scoring eight of her 12 points in the second half. The Seawolves defense only allowed 17 points in the second twenty, however the Seawolves only put up 25 points on offense.

Seawolves' forward Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) was a perfect 6-6 in the first half and ended the night with 18 points on 8-9 shooting from the floor. Hoyt netted 12 and Maria Veino (Sanford, ME) pitched in with 10 points and a team high seven rebounds. Griffin and point guard Tiana Burton (Brunswick, ME) each ended the game with nine points and Kagiliery added eight. Zyrah Giustra (New Sharon, ME) led the team in steals with five.

Knights' center Paige Wells led the way for VTC scoring ten points and grabbing 16 rebounds.

The Lady Seawolves will be back in action for the semifinal game on Saturday at 2pm against the winner of tonight's matchup between Central Maine CC and Eastern Maine CC.
