Seawolves Pass Non-Conference Test Against PSU-Mont Alto

South Portland - The Lady Seawolves (6-1, 2-0 YSCC) got off to a slow start in this afternoon's contest against the Nittany Lions of PSU-Mont Alto, trailing 14-11 after one quarter of play. SMCC came back with a vengeance, outscoring the Lions by 10 points in both the second and third quarters, and taking the eventual 71-46 victory. 

Both teams stuggled to find their offense early with a score of only 4-2, in favor of the Lions, after five minutes of play. PSU proceeded to go on an 8-4 run, giving them a six point lead, their largest of the game, before Seawolves' point guard Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) connected on her first of three makes from beyond the arc to pull the Seawolves to within three, 12-9. The Lions would hold the three point lead for the remainder of the first quarter. The Seawolves came alive at the the start of the second, opening with a 10-0 run that included four consecutive layups by post players Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) and Maria Veino (Sanford, ME). SMCC proceeded to outscore the Lions 18-8 in the quarter and take a 29-22 lead into the break.

The Seawolves' continued to pour on the offense after the intermission, outscoring PSU by 18 over the next two quarters. Turner led the squad in the third, scoring 10 of her 15 points, and the Seawolves' bench controlled the fourth quarter, scoring all but two of the team's points.

Jones ended the day with a team high in both points (17) and rebounds (11) while Turner netted 15. The Nittany Lions were paced by post player Alexis Small who led all scorers with 20 points to go along with eight boards. 

There will be little rest for the Seawolves as they turn around and play PSU-Beaver, defending USCAA national champions, tomorrow at home at 3pm.
