Lady Seawolves Use Monster Third Quarter To Take 71-61 Win Over CCRI

South Portland - Trailing nine at the half, the Lady Seawolves used a 35 point third quarter effort to overcome the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), 71-61.

The Seawolves suffered their worst lost of the season earlier in the week, falling to the Mustangs of CMCC by 30 on Wednesday. CCRI traveled to CMCC on Friday and defeated the Mustangs 94-71 before arriving at HUB gymnasium on Saturday to test the Lady Seawolves and see how they would respond to playing a big game after a loss. The Lady Seawolves would not disappoint, they battled for 40 minutes, overcame a 12 point deficit and put nine players in the scoring column to take the ten point nonconference victory.

After one quarter of play the Seawolves held a one point edge, 12-11, but the Knights held SMCC to just 18% shooting in the third to take 30-21 lead into the break. CCRI's Kennethah Harden scored 16 points in the first two quarters to lead the Lady Knights.

Intermission was exactly what the Seawolves needed, refocused and reenergized they came out firing in the third. As a team SMCC shot 63% from the field and 90% from the free throw line, scoring 35 points, to take a 14 point cushion into the final period. Seawolves' point guard Jordan Turner (Casco, ME) scored 10 third quarter points, including 6-7 from the charity stripe. The Knights snapped back to life in the fourth and managed to outscore the Seawolves 20-15 but the Seawolves' efforts from the free throw line, 10-10 in the fourth quarter, were enough to hold for the win.

Turner led the Seawolves with a team high 13 points, while post players Alicia Hoyt (Steep Falls, ME) and Amira Jones (Chicopee, MA) each added 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore shooting guard Kendra Kagiliery (Kittery, ME) scored a season high nine points, shooting a flawless 2-2 from the floor and 4-4 from the charity stripe.

Harden ended with a game high 26 points and 14 boards and Maritza Guastave added 13 rebounds for the Knights.

The Lady Seawolves (13-3, 5-2 YSCC) are now on holiday break, and will return to play their first game of the new year at Holyoke CC on January 6th at 4pm.
