Conrad and Company Improve to 2-0

AUBURN, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team defeated the University of New Brunswick- St. John 49-44 in its second and final game of the Can-Am Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 23 hosted by Central Maine Community College.

Both offenses started slow in the first quarter, but picked up scoring in the second to leave St. John with a 26-23 advantage going into the half. Playing steady defense in the third quarter, SMCC outscored its opponent 14-7. With five minutes remaining in the game, St. John knocked down back-to-back free throws to claim a 43-42 lead. SMCC went on a 6-1 run to finish the game and secure a 49-44 victory.

SMCC's Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine) finished as the game's top scorer with 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Co-captain Destinie Montano (Chicopee, Mass.) added 11 points to go along with her three assists and first-year Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) netted 10 to contribute to her team's 23 bench points.

Head Coach Katie Bergeron commented, "The team was led by big minutes from our three captains and great shooting from Jennifer and Alicia off the bench. I'm so proud of the team for walking away with two wins this weekend."

SMCC improves to 2-0 on the season and will face the Knights of Berkeley College (NY) in its home opener on Sunday, Oct. 30. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
