SeaWolves Stay Perfect in Rout of VTC

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College women's basketball team defeated the Knights of Vermont Technical College 84-43 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) match-up on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the HUB Gymnasium.

Senior forward Jennifer Conrad (Monmouth, Maine) recorded her second double-double of the season leading all scorers with 30 points and adding 13 rebounds. First-year Alicia Ruth (Plaistow, N.H.) recorded a season-high 24 points, knocking down six from beyond the arch. Sophomore Alexis Antonacci (Long Island, N.Y.) quarterbacked the offense finishing with nine assists and 10 points.

SMCC went ahead in the fifth minute of the game and never looked back. The SeaWolves held a 35-18 advantage at the half and played with the same urgency in the second to tie their season single-game point total.

Head Coach Katie Bergeron applauded her team's effort commenting, "The girls battled today. We faced adversity with players out suffering from injury, and to execute and win the way we did was amazing. Jennifer Conrad showed excellent leadership putting the team on her back, finishing so many and-one opportunities. We also saw another hot shooting day from first-year Ally Ruth. She had to play more minutes than she's used to, but did it with a smile and just kept hitting threes. They made it fun to watch!"

The SeaWolves improve to 2-0 in conference play and stay a perfect 7-0 overall. In a post-game interview, Conrad explained, "Even though we're 7-0, we don't take that lightly. There's some big games coming up, UMA and CM— we need to stay mentally tough and focus on these next couple games." Co-captain Vanese Barnes (Jay, Maine) added, "It's all about mental toughness."
